I agree – the S and the steamy soup are the best!
Hmmm…if the designs are this good and the prize is $75, I should throw in a competition myself.
Looking at the design by Nick Carter, the first thing that comes to mind is “I don’t think you can do that.” I imagine that the folks at DC comics would have a cow if you tried to use the Superman “S” without permission. I like the design of it, too bad that if you drop the “S” from the cup, I’m afraid it might lose it’s meaning and become just another logo.
I too like the design of Nick Carters steamy soup. Good lines that are cohesively intact. Good use of type too. (Though as Eddie has said, unsure how the superman S would work)
When I started thinking about this, I created a list of all possible ideas that are associated with the concept. After narrowing down a lot of items I decided to go with a ’steam woman’ literaly delivering soup. The figgures pose also is designed to resemble the superman stance on the original superman comic. It is a good point regarding similarities in trademark usage of the Super Man ‘S’ symbol. Should the soup illustration be chosen by competition owner I would be happy to revise the symbol identifier to look less obviously connected to Marvel’s character logo.

In the hopes that this design/photoshop related challenge we are facing could be of some interest here. I’d like to share the following:
A bunch of friends from around the planet have been meeting online to work on starting-up a new humanitarian/ecological aid social-network nonprofit. We are all volunteers and had a great designer who got us started-off well, but then had to leave.
We were wondering how to get this smart design community’s input on the logo we are currently favoring; most specifically (and here’s where perhaps Photoshop skills are needed the most) in getting this flat, 2-D logo to come ALIVE. How to…
- bring depth (but how much?)
- show some sheen/reflectivity (but how much?)
- to drop shadow or not
- etc, etc
….all the things it seems you sharp designers/photoshop’rs hold the magic keys to.
Any way this could be interesting as a topic here?
